My motivation for this activity is to make my own record my perception of a gradual insidious encroachment of development of landscape, and subsequent potential loss of wild habitat in rural and semi-rural areas. Although the South Downs is protected from development having been given the status of a National Park, planning permission had been granted for 500 new houses less than half a mile away from the site of the start of this soundwalk. At the time of release, that housing development is nearing completion, with the total eradication of a meadow habitat essential to ground-nesting skylarks and other birdlife.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #881111; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Additionally - simply for my own entertainment possibly - I wanted to present material evidence of me talking to myself<span class="bcTruncateMore" style="background-color: white; color: #881111; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">; something I catch myself doing more and more these days.

My narrative is deliberately banal - factual descriptions of the landscape I was seeing ahead of me, around me or on the ground as I walked, along with the occasional brief interaction with other walkers. My intention was to produce a simple document. Sometimes there is the sound of a gate opening and closing. Despite passing a livery at the start of the walk, no horses were encountered this time, sadly.

Recorded January 2022.<span style="background-color: white; color: #881111; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; Originally intended to be a series of performances at Brighton's The Ceramic House art gallery, due to the pandemic this project became a file-sharing exchange with all artists producing material for it remote from each other. Rowan transformed household sounds from her kitchen into an intriguing soundworld as if by an alchemical process. She performed a beautiful solo set at Aural Detritus Concert Series microfestival at Phoenix Brighton in June of 2013, and I performed on the bill with her at Simon Whetham's Active Crossover at Sanctuary Cella, Hove in February 2010. I first met her when she performed with her friend Aimie as Walpurgis Night in February 2007 at a Slightly Off Kilter event with Lee Patterson & Jez riley French I organised at Westhill Hall in Brighton. I think this would have been around the end of the improvising group Leopard Leg which she was a part of. The pair produced interesting, well thought out work; and I was impressed by the beauty and sophistication of their music.

Although I did not know her in a social sense, I know she was well-known and well-liked in the Brighton musician's community and further away. Her sound practice, being a sensitive amalgam of field recording and tape music, drew many admirers. For a while she co-ran The Magic City record shop in Todmorden. In my experience, she was always friendly and easy to work with in a professional sense, and I always found her work to be unique and absorbing.

Rowan has work released on labels including Chocolate Monk, Tadpole Records, Crow Versus Crow (with Graham Dunning) and Third Kind Records.

Our condolences to her friends, family and husband.

- Paul Khimasia Morgan, July 2021

aural detritushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18092882043439897826noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3917631780446836909.post-48924319471284942622020-12-16T08:51:00.006-08:002020-12-16T08:51:56.334-08:00Aural Detritus mix at Radio On BerlinHear a 28 minute mix of Aural Detritus releases broadcast on Berlin's Radio On this month:

https://www.radio-on-berlin.com/?p=10914

schedule is here:

https://www.radio-on-berlin.com/?page_id=10235

Excerpts from Twenty Seconds Over by Jason Kahn, In A Shetland Landscape by Joseph Young, The Phantom Sunrise by Steve Beresford, Blanca Regina, Richard Sanderson & Paul Khimasia Morgan and more...

Big thank you to Rinus van Alebeek and all at Radio On Berlin.

aural detritushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18092882043439897826noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3917631780446836909.post-15498587953318328152020-11-14T10:20:00.003-08:002020-11-14T10:20:59.480-08:00The Joy of Isolation

The whole second piece, 'Sunrise', is an exercise in <span style="font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; text-align: start;">control, I thought, with some fine introspective moments. 'Phantom' is a more chaotic affair <span style="font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; text-align: start;">by comparison and an excellent meeting of instruments and objects; bits of music (what <span style="font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; text-align: start;">seemed 'Für Elise'?) pops up, melancholic touches of the melodeon sit next to abstract <span style="font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; text-align: start;">movements of drone-like sounds and the voice of Regina going through it all, wordlessly <span style="font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; text-align: start;">chanting; something not present in the second piece. Quite a fine document and I think it <span style="font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; text-align: start;">works well without seeing the films."

Sunrise deals with risqué themes such as obsession,
temptation, lust and ultimately, redemption. A naïve countryman living an idyllic, bucolic
lifestyle with his wife and their young child. The serenity is shattered when a beautiful
femme fatale from the city enters his life. He soon falls in love with her, aware for the
first time that there may be more to the world than the life he has settled
for. As their secret passion
intensifies, the femme fatale convinces the countryman to kill his wife so they
can be together forever. The countryman
is then forced into a nightmarish decision…

Murnau was given complete artistic freedom by his
financier William Fox and he took full advantage. Sunrise is full of cutting edge special
effects, mammoth sets, and a feeling of experimentalism that doesn’t get in the
way of the narrative. Fox’ investment
paid off; at the very first Academy Awards in 1928, Sunrise won three Oscars;
for Unique And Artistic Picture, Jane Gaynor won Best Actress, and Charles
Rosher and Karl Struss for their ground-breaking cinematography.

continued to play free improvisation with a number of prominent musicians
including Evan Parker, John Zorn and Han Bennink.

Blanca Regina is an artist, teacher and curator currently
